Global NutrITion 2004

An advanced training programme that combines an updating on priority issues in global nutrition with skills training in the use of information technology in academic nutrition training. The programme is organised jointly by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Uppsala University with financial support from Sida.

Global NutrITion 2004 has a focus on Africa, Latin America and South/Southeast Asia - a full list of countries from which applications are welcome in 2004 is found under "More details" below. Applications are invited from university lecturers in these regions who are involved in university level training of nutrition professionals. Brochures and application forms will also be posted to Swedish Embassies in the designated countries in August.

Designated countries 2004
A total of 25 participants from the countries listed below will be sponsored by Sida. The Sponsorship will cover programme fee, food and accommodation and international travel to and from Sweden.

Programme aims and content
The programme combines as sharing of current knowledge in global nutrition concerns with the introduction to, and use of information technology in higher training. Special attention is given to optimal use of IT technology to strengthen higher nutrition training of professionals in the health, food and agricultural sectors.

The main objective of the proposed programme is to make possible a long term collaboration in nutrition among higher training institutions, in the South and the North, through use of IT technology.

More specifically the programme will:
Train and develop skills among academic teachers in optimal use of IT in training in global nutrition thereby making possible a continuous search for, and exchange of, knowledge and information, and closer contacts with colleagues in other countries

Impart and share knowledge of new findings, new methods and new concepts in nutrition.
The programme has three parts:
Phase I (5 weeks, Uppsala, March-April 2003)

Full time structured programme with lectures, theoretical presentations, seminars and skills training in computer use and pedagogics. Topics include:
Using IT in higher training - accessing the net, searching nutrition information on the web, internet communication, computer pedagogics. Special challenges in use of IT in low-income countries.

Nutrition trends and challenges, environmental, health, food security and gender concerns, nutrition as a human right. Review of the concept of malnutrition, growth standards, current issues and controversies in macro-and micronutrient nutrition. Mild under nutrition and mortality, rehabilitation of severely malnourished children, maternal nutrition and pregnancy outcome, infant feeding, HIV/AIDS. Diet lifestyle and diseases, obesity and disease risks, nutrition problems of urbanisation, nutrition of ageing populations.

Challenges in nutrition training. Problem based learning, review of nutrition curricula in various training programmes, making and using CD-based material in higher nutrition training
Phase II (Assignments in participants home institutions)

Network communication using web based communications tools, team assignments on preparation of interactive learning material for nutrition training of the selected target group. Planning for use of IT in nutrition training in participants' institutions.

A virtual conference will be held during this period.


Phase III
(7-9 days, African, Asian or Latin American country, autumn)

Workshop with presentations of team assignments on CD-based training material and regional collaboration and networking.
Participants
The Global NutrITion programme is designed for academics at university departments or similar institutions in Africa, Asia and Latin America, who are involved in higher nutrition training of medical or other health professionals or nutrition, food and agriculture professionals. An appropriate authority or institution must nominate candidates. Applications are invited from those who hold at least a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, food science, medicine, nutrition or allied health professions and who are teaching nutrition in higher academic training programmes. Documented proficiency in English is a prerequisite. Basic training in word processing is compulsory. The programme will admit 25 participants per year.


Cost of participation
The programme receives financial support from the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). The programme pays the cost of programme fees, accommodation, meals and international travel for participants from designated low-income countries.


Application
Closing day for application to the programme for 2003 is November 1st, 2002. Applications should be made on the special form attached and mailed to the nearest Swedish Embassy, with a copy mailed directly to the Department of Rural Development, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Non-native English speakers must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. E-mail or telefax will notify selected candidates. Acceptance of participation in all three phases must be approved by the nominating authority and confirmed within two weeks.
